The G20 AI Prosperity Objectives

Artificial Intelligence (AI) promises to power a new era of industry by enhancing productivity, competitiveness, and scientific progress. AI has the potential to accelerate industrialization, reindustrialization, and economic growth; revitalize our factory floors; energize micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs); and create high-quality jobs through widespread adoption across G20 members, underpinned by sector-specific, risk-based approaches to deployment. AI will strengthen domestic technological capabilities and enable all G20 members to benefit from innovation. The rapid advancement of AI will also have implications for the workforce, driving demand for new skills and abilities across industries. We will work to build resilient future workforces by preparing workers for AI-driven transitions. With effective policies, applicable legal frameworks, investments, and support, AI can create opportunities for workers, innovators, and students preparing to enter the labor market. AI can serve as a powerful tool for augmentation, unlocking new levels of creativity, economic opportunity, and productivity that allow workers and innovators not just to adapt, but to thrive and lead in the 21st-century economy.
We, Ministers of the G20 who assembled in Chapel Hill, recognize that emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence have the potential to expand economic opportunity, improve quality of life, and deliver greater prosperity for our peoples. We acknowledge the importance of international cooperation, including the G20’s prior work on AI, notably the G20 AI Principles, and recognize human-centric and reliable approaches to secure AI adoption. To ensure that the benefits of AI innovation are widely shared, we will promote access to AI skills development for all our peoples, including those with less exposure to AI and STEM. We affirm the value of investing in digital infrastructure, including connectivity, data, and computing resources, and developing a skilled technical workforce to realize the full potential of emerging technologies. We believe it is important to put all our peoples at the heart of the AI-driven transformation.
Accordingly, taking into account national circumstances, consistent with applicable legal frameworks, and with respect for fundamental freedoms, we will seek to:
Advance the development of AI skills credentials, educational programs, and training programs, including in partnership with industry, educational, and research institutions, to provide high-value educational options such as foundational training for the teaching and learning of useful AI skills.
Build strong AI literacy across the broader workforce, including in the STEM workforce, by supporting the integration of AI education and training into STEM education through initiatives such as hands-on learning opportunities, internships, co-op programs, and fellowships with companies and organizations leading the development or deployment of AI tools.
Promote and invest in programs such as apprenticeships and on-the-job training through partnerships among the public sector, the private-sector, and educational and technical institutions that develop and adopt AI, to develop clear pathways into high-quality jobs and expand career opportunities for all our peoples across industry sectors, while strengthening local technology development.
Expand access to opportunities for hands-on technical AI training, through partnerships with industry and with scientific and educational institutions that provide students with access to digital and high-performance computing infrastructure necessary to work on cutting-edge AI research and development (R&D) through industry-funded PhD programs, internships, fellowships, and research residencies, thereby strengthening national R&D capabilities and domestic AI innovation ecosystems.
Empower the next generation of students and apprentices to reap the benefits of AI and emerging technologies by investing in and promoting age-appropriate AI education, strengthening AI literacy among educators, including an understanding of AI systems, their capabilities, and responsible use, and supporting access to educational resources, training opportunities, technical expertise, and AI learning tools.
Advance AI skill development across the entire workforce, including the public sector, by promoting lifelong learning, reskilling, employer-paid training, and on-the-job learning, recognizing the acquisition and application of AI skills, and helping workers access emerging roles created through AI adoption and technological advancement.
Expand early-career pathways into AI-related occupations for all our peoples by supporting AI apprenticeships, certificate programs, and training programs that may be tied to hiring commitments upon completion.
Encourage the voluntary sharing of information on technical workforce development and on best practices for AI adoption across the public and private sectors to improve understanding of how AI is transforming occupations and how G20 members are navigating AI adoption, while respecting privacy and confidentiality of information in accordance with applicable legal frameworks.
Support workforce readiness for AI through partnerships between the public sector and the private sector to promote clear communication regarding the deployment of AI in the workplace and opportunities for workers to develop the skills needed to adapt and succeed.
These objectives are voluntarily supported through The AI Prosperity Compact by G20 members’ respective private-sector companies and educational, scientific, and research institutions. By prioritizing the prosperity of our peoples, we will ensure that the benefits of AI innovation are widely shared, strengthening our economies and securing a prosperous future for G20 members and beyond.
